THE CONCEPT

On a pleasant summer night, under the starry sky, in the magnificent surroundings of the Tour Royale, take part in a unique and original experience with Les Voix Animées.

Who never dreamed of traveling through time ?

On Saturday 2 July, get on an incredible adventure which will take you to Renaissance !

Close your eyes, open up your ears and discover « 1514, Les Voix Animées’s journey through time and music », a musical and historical podcast filled with creativity, sometimes moving, quite surprising and above all, very funny !

THE STORY

In the middle of a rehearsal, four singers from the ensemble Les Voix Animées are mysteriously carried to the Castle of Alençon in January 1514 in the quarters of Marguerite, the sister of future King Francis I…

1514 will take you just before 1515, the symbolic year of the Renaissance which remained famous in the collective memory.

A 16-episode podcast written by Denis Baronnet and Jean-Christophe Mast, directed by Louise Loubrieu, recorded at the Centre culturel de rencontre d’Ambronay, featuring Les Voix Animées, Dominique Blanc, Dominique Pinon and many other actors !

A coproduction France Musique and Les Voix Animées in partnership with the Centre culturel de rencontre d’Ambronay.

Pour ce premier lundi du mois de juillet et pour bien commencer la semaine, Les Voix Animées viendront jusqu'à vous pour vous offrir un bouquet de chansons sous forme d'un mini-concert privé.

Au programme : des chansons de Georges Brassens, les Beatles, The Mamas and the Papas et quelques tubes de la Renaissance, le tout, 100% a cappella !

Les Voix Animées celebrate an art which has been part of their non-sacred and recreative programs since their beginning. Especially arranged for the vocal ensemble by some very talented arrangers, Alcibiade Minel, Anne Mirou, Etienne Planel, Etienne Desaux, the music that composes the program of this concert allows the skilful art of polyphony to get in touch with popular songs for the enjoyment of the public’s ears.

As a grand finale, a medley of hits from musicals created by Philip Lawson who, for almost twenty years, was the baritone and arranger of the famous English group, The King’s Singers…

You will hear some popular songs and some songs taken from musicals by the Beatles, The Mamas and the Papas, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Gilbert Bécaud, Jacques Dutronc, Boris Vian, Georges Brassens, ABBA…

Published by the Roman master in 1584 at Alessandro Gardano’s printing house, under the name of « Motettorum Quinque Vocibus Liber Quartus », Canticum Canticorum is a cycle of motets with high consistency, intense spirituality and subtle sensuality. The « Song of Songs » is undoubtedly a form of public apology that Palestrina expressed, after publishing his madrigals, of a genre both secular and gallant. A proof can be seen with the dedication to Pope Gregory XIII…

In 2022, Les Voix Animées are celebrating Italy by dedicating their concert cycle to the composers of the Cinquecento and by paying a particular tribute to two major composers of the Renaissance, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Giaches de Wert.

These two masters, through an absolute art of the counterpoint, made the music of the Papal Chapel spread, as well as the music of the House of Gonzaga in Mantua. Their leading light inspired a generation of musicians and accompanied, throughout all Europe, the transformation of the Renaissance’s « stile antico » to the Baroque’s « stile nuovo ».

Les Voix Animées have been singing together since 2009, under the musical direction of Luc Coadou. They specialise in a cappella polyphony and their repertoire goes from Renaissance to nowadays. From Toulon to Beijing, by way of Paris, London, Rotterdam or Lisbon, Les Voix Animées like to surprise their audiences by performing new versions of famous French and Anglo-Saxon songs ! The vocal ensemble, composed of six singers, would like to give you a bouquet of songs made of popular re-arranged songs by Charles Trenet, Yves Montand, Abba, the Beatles… as well as some tunes taken from musicals and a few « hits » from the 16th century.

The second concert program proposed this year by Les Voix Animées at Le Thoronet Abbey is dedicated to Giaches de Wert, master of the Palace chapel of Santa Barbara in Mantua.

Like many Franco-Flemish cantors from the Renaissance, Giaches de Wert was welcomed, trained and employed very young in the sumptuous Italian churches.

The presence of Giaches de Wert in Mantua ensured the musical reputation of the ducal city and attracted lots of musicians, among which Claudio Monteverdi. Like his contemporaries, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina in Roma or Orlande de Lassus in Munich, Giaches de Wert, through his art of the counterpoint brings to the « stile antico » an unprecedented expressive richness, which announces the new baroque art. The motets of this concert are taken from two collections published in Venice in 1581 at Girolamo Scotto’s : « Il secondo libro de motetti a cinque voci » and « Modulationum cum sex vocibus liber primus ».

The Papal Court but also the Houses of Sforza, of Gonzaga, of Medici or the House of Este managed to support a considerable number of musicians coming from Flanders, France, England or Spain. Italy was a land of refuge for them, a compulsory step for a dawning or confirmed career. This is how cantors, composers (which often went hand in hand at the time) and music publishers came to enhance their training and their reputation. Some came and stayed, others just passed by and left with new forms in their luggage, a second practice and some artistic influences which will help nourish the music of all Europe.

« The Adventurer » / « Easy Street »

Les Voix Animées illustrate and ornament two short burlesque films by Chaplin in a quartet using melodies, refrains, onomatopoeias and vocal sound effects. More than just a musical accompaniment, the challenge of this show is to have two forms of creation coexist simultaneously and to present the movies of course but also the architects of their « soundtrack » performed live. This show, where the sound-effect singers and the unforgettable Charlot take turns in front of the stage, brings music and movies together in a ballet of shadows and lights.
